New Chairman for the Construction Industry Council
At its Council meeting yesterday Keith Clarke was appointed as the new Chairman of the
Construction Industry Council. The Rt Hon Nick Raynsford MP, CIC’s former Chairman, now
becomes Deputy Chairman in accordance with CIC’s rules & byelaws.
Keith Clarke is chief executive of Atkins, the UK’s largest engineering consultancy and second
largest architecture practice. Keith, a Chartered Architect with more than 30 years’ experience
in construction and engineering, joined Atkins from Skanska AB, where he was Executive Vice

previously worked for the City of New York for 10 years in an economic development role, as
well as Olympia and York, Trafalgar House and Kvaerner.
Keith is an Advisory Board Member at Imperial College, a member of the Supporters at Large
Group for Open House and Patron of the Environmental Industries Commission. He has
resigned as Chair of the National Platform’s High Level Steering Group for Constructing
Excellence to take up his new role, and has passed on his position as Chair of the CIC’s
Health & Safety Committee, which he undertook for two years.
Taking up his new role, he said:
“Climate change, coupled with ever increasing urbanisation, population growth and scarcity of
resources, moves the roles of the professional bodies to the core of the debate. This is an
incredibly challenging and exciting time for the sector.”
ASSISTANCE TO THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT IN POST EARTHQUAKE RECOVERY AND RECONSTRUCTION
I am cascading this to you and about 35 other senior people across the civil engineering and construction industries with the attached e-mail from Mike Charlton-Weedy at the Cabinet Office Emergency Planning Centre.
As you will see, the Chinese Government has requested help with post earthquake recovery and reconstruction. In particular, they wish to make contact with people and organisations who can provide:-
- knowledge
- experience
- expertise
I understand from Mike that the Chinese are perfectly willing to pay full commercial rates, but they urgently need to determine who can do what.
I should be most grateful if you would give the matter some consideration and pass on the request to others in your network who may be in a position to help.
Please respond direct to the Civil Contingencies Secretariat of the Cabinet Office (phil.richards@cabinet-office.x.gsi.gov.uk) in the format shown below.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, or Mike Charlton-Weedy, if you have any queries.
